LEEDS KNIGHTS emerged from their second weekend of the play-offs in a good place, top of Group A having only dropped one point from their four games.
As expected the double-header with Hull Seahawks was an electric affair across two nights, the first ending in a 7-6 overtime loss at Elland Road for the Knights before they gained swift revenge with a 6-4 victory in Hull the following night.
It leaves the Knights needing only a point from their final two group games against Peterborough Phantoms to make it to the Final Four Weekend at Coventry’s SkyDome Arena on April 19-20.
They visit Peterborough on Saturday before finishing off the group campaign on home ice 24 hours later, a night sure to be full of emotion as it will mark the last-ever appearance at The Castle for Knights’ legend Matt Haywood.
Neither derby encounter against Hull disappointed at the weekend, which was dominated by comebacks throughout.
On Saturday at The Castle, the Knights got ahead after just 46 seconds when Matt Bissonnette beat Dmitri Zimozdra from long distance, although the first period belonged to the Seahawks who went into the first break 3-1 ahead, a brace from Johnny Corneil sandwiching a goal on the break by Owen Sobchak.
The Knights then dominated the scoring in the second, another long-range blast from Bissonnetete making it a one-goal game in the 30th minute before Mac Howlett levelled five minutes later before Finley Bradon pounced on a rebound to make it 4-3 in the 39th minute.
Further blows were traded in the third, Sobchak making it 4-4 at 41.18, Howlett’s second making it 5-4 five minutes later only for Jason Hewitt’s bullet to level things up again at 53.43.
Matt Barron put the Knights ahead once again at 56.53 on the power play and that’s looked how it would end until, 13 seconds from time, Sobchak pounced on a rebound to take the game into overtime, where Lee Bonner ensured the extra point went to the visitors when finishing off a breakaway.
It was a similarly close encounter less than 24 hours later in Hull, this time Leeds gaining a two-goal lead before the Seahawks came roaring back.
It was an effective power play that got Leeds 3-1 in front less than 25 minutes in, Jordan Buesa striking first on the man advantage at 13.02 before Barron cancelled out Sobchak’s skilful 15th-minute equaliser with just 42 seconds of the period remaining.
Oli Endicott tipped in from Kieran Brown to double the lead 23.06 - another power play strike - although Hull made it a one-goal game through a Sobchak power play rocket from the left circle at 33.24.
Sobchak’s hat-trick marker at 44.30 was followed by him laying off for Svec to fire past Gospel five minutes to give the home side control.
But Leeds had a late response of their own, the same Hull had the previous night, Bissonnette picking his spot from the blue line to make it 4-4 at 54.23 before Brown found the top- left-hand corner of Zimozdra’s net after a neat lay-off from Barron just over two minutes later.
As the Seahawks chased an equaliser, the net was left empty, allowing Bissonnette to stroke the puck home from the halfway mark with 62 seconds remaining, enabling Leeds to top the group with two games to play.
